Official: Russia finds new proof that Arctic shelf belongs to it

ST. PETERSBURG, Oct 18 (PRIME) -- The Russian Defense Ministry has received new all-encompassing proofs that the Arctic Ocean shelf belongs to Russia, and a U.N. commission will consider them in February, Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov said at a meeting of the maritime board of the government on Friday.

“The Russian Federation’s Defense Ministry has conducted additional batimetric and gravity measurements, and acoustic profiling. I think this research is sufficient to provide good justification of our application at a meeting of the commission to be held in February 2020,” Borisov said.

In 2015, Russia submitted a revised bid to extend the Arctic shelf by adding the Lomonosov ridge and several other formations. Inferred resources of hydrocarbons of the formations amount to 4.9 billion tonnes of fuel equivalent.
